Above all, we sincerely thank our parents for their unwavering support in the financial and moral aspect and to our Almighty God, who gives us knowledge and strength to accomplish this task.

INTRODUCTION

All of us have our own attitudes, needs, interests and beliefs that made us unique human beings. Each one of us has a role in our society that makes our community either a good or bad place to live in. All units in our Society has an impact on how people live their lives and on how people perceive things and all things are connected to each other that helps people to live and to survive in this world.

        

         This Portfolio was created to broaden the understanding of the students and the readers on the happenings in our society. The subject SS SOC CUL (Society and Culture with Family Planning) introduced the students to concepts, theories and ideas in understanding the Society and Culture and guide them to comprehend on the social ideas or social perspectives in the Philippines and for the students to be more aware and appreciative on the concept of Culture and Society and its effect to the lives of people. This Portfolio with a theme " Effects of Culture to Society" is composed of the following topics such as, Socialization, Agents of Socialization, Social Groups and Organizations, Classification of Groups, "Doing Nothing" an activity on Deviance, "Baby Egg" an activity on Social Stratification, "Social Movement in the Philippines" an activity on Social Change and Social Movement and Marriage, the rights and obligations of husband and wife.

     

     The importance of this portfolio is to provide the students better understanding of their social role in the community where they live, to enable them to understand why people act the way that others do differently, to enable them to be more aware on the idea or perspective of Social Movement in the Philippines and on how and why a specific group fight for the things they believed is right and necessary and lastly, to provide the students the information on what are the rights, obligations and responsibilities of husband and wife and its effect to the culture of Society.

Socialization

The process that teaches individuals to become functioning human beings who fit into a number of groups and be  productive members of the society.

Agents of Socialization

Specific people, groups and organizations who are chiefly responsible for transforming an individual into a functioning human being.

The Family

Most important agent of socialization, it is where the first learning of elements of human relationship occur.

The School

The primary agent of socialization in industrialized societies.

Peer Group

A group of individuals of roughly the same age who are linked by common interests.

Mass Media

Various forms of communication that reach large audience without any personal contact between senders and receivers.

Other Agents

The individual may be influenced by other agents – religious groups, youth organizations and other corporate institutions.

Effects of Culture to the Society

The agents of socialization deeply affect the way people and individuals live, speak, the way they observe norms and their behavior in a certain society. The family is the primary source of these; the honing of the child starts at home and is developed and influenced by other outside agents like the school, church, peers and the mass media. the way a child lives in a certain society is the result of his experiences and values taught by these agents. He will either become a deviant or an asset to the society's development.

Reflection:

As what we have observed now a day’s some children coming from broken families tend to stray away from what is right in the eyes of the society. For example we have a group mate who knows a broken family, the oldest kid is a lesbian,she tends to go out with known addicts, often seen smoking, and drinking liquor at a very young age, and she blames her mother for having been left that she and her siblings are now facing a lot of problems. So you see, if the molding of the children at home is considered unsecured, the nest best agents to perform this obligation are the school, church, peers and the mass media. It's either these agents hone these children to be better citizens or not. It's very important that a child's values starts at home and be developed outside to conform on how to live in a certain society that would entail his belonging and his function to the said society.

AGGREGATE GROUP

A social grouping whose members stay in one place but not necessarily interact with each other.

ACCORDING TO INTERACTION AND RELATIONSHIP

Primary Group

Refers to a small, informal group of people who interact in a more intimate manner and who have direct and face to face communication with each other.

ACCORDING TO MEMBERSHIP

In Group

A group of people whose sense of belongingness strong.

ACCORDING TO THEIR NATURE, FORM, OBJECTIVES AND INTERACTION

Formal Group

An organization where the specific organizational structure is constructed to achieve specific goals and objectives.

EFFECTS CULTURE TO THE SOCIETY

Forming groups of like individuals can benefit the said individuals immensely. Creating bonds with people can help develop necessary social skills like collaboration and conflict resolution. A group that have similar interests can be positive influence on one's behavior. They can help you try new things, boost your self-confidence and help you develop your identity. In addition to that, a good effect of social groups is, it fulfills that need to belong without negatively influencing your decisions. Developing social groups can have many consequences. The lack of socialization between social groups makes people less prepared for making friends during their adulthood. It put labels and stereotypes on groups of people, forcing people's true identities to remain hidden. If the attributes are overcome by conformity, it will be difficult to form an identity.

Reflection:

Human as we are, we are social beings who live out our lives in the company of other humans. We organize ourselves into various kinds of social groupings observing the same rule, objectives, norms, and beliefs. It can affect the society in a way that we do, say and live shows how we conform with the society.

Though individuality is positive and natural, we all need other people in our lives. If an individual feels that he is accepted in one group, he will develop good relationship and camaraderie among the members of the group and probably bring out the best of him if the group he belongs to are good influences. Individuals that experience this kind of situation feels that sense of belongingness, which is important in developing themselves.

Social group gives an individual a sense of identity as well as meet individual needs such as need for emotional intimacy. It's a nice thing that you can share what your problems are to the persons whom you are comfortable with. In that way, you might be comforted and encourage to continue living life to the fullest.

EFFECTS OF CULTURE TO THE SOCIETY

            Generally, "deviance" is regarded in a negative light, but there are many "positive" sides to deviance. Negative Deviance is a behavior that under conforms to accepted norms; people rioting against their government would be an example of negative deviance. Positive Deviance is over conforms to social expectations examples would be people bureaucrats and people who enforce their society without question. Deviance affirms cultural values and norms. As moral creatures, people must prefer some attitudes and behaviors to others. But any definition of virtue rests on an opposing idea of vice. There can be no good without evil and no justice without crime. Deviance is needed to define and support morality.

REFLECTION             

            In order for us to understand and to feel what really deviance was, our teacher gave us an activity. That morning, some of our classmates seem to feel nervous about our activity but some were just chill at the other corner of our room. The task was simple, all we have to do was to have the courage of standing there being passed by the crowd and "DOING NOTHING". Our groups chose where the nice setting to perform our deviance activity and yes we’re partly excited. We stood for almost 10 minutes in the second floor of the stairs near the faculty room forming a line and as well as in the Civil Engineering hallway. People passing thought that we were a group of weirdo people with nothing to do with our lives, others assumed that we were penalized and some were looking at us up and down with disapproval in their faces thinking that we lack attentions. Labelled as a deviant, standing there, we had received and noticed different reactions from people passing at the stairs and hallways, giving us the feeling of shame.      

When we finished the activity we went back to our room and as usual our classmates were noisy telling their own experiences to us. That's a nice and challenging activity. In that activity we somehow experienced violating the usual norms of the society. Deviance for others may think that it’s just normal,  on the other hand, this is unusual for others but whatever our views about deviance is, it may be negative or positive it simply elaborate the complex concept of  the society.

This portfolio helps us understand better about deviance, in real life we may laugh at deviants because they are different in their actions but who’s to be blamed? They may also laugh at us because we are all the same. Sometimes being different isn't bad it’s somehow means that you're brave enough to be yourself. This lesson has taught us to somehow accept the people that the society named the “deviants”. We will also be more conscious of other’s thoughts when we see someone who is different from us in anyway and take what we have learned about deviance in order not to wrongly judge another person. We have learned to be more tolerant to the needs of deviance with a perfect knowledge of how complex society is.

Effect of Culture to Society

The effect of Social Stratification to the Society is the division of social status, if you belong to the lower class there is a few opportunities to escape from poverty and we cannot deny the discrimination, unfairness and deprivation of the needs that they needed and wanted and for those who belong to the upper class, they are rewarded with more wealth, authority, power and prestige. All men are exerting more effort in competing with other classes and to have a higher standard of living and it causes social disparity and many problems in the unjust system that we have in the Philippines  and it affects life chances, lifestyles and prestige, still it depends on how you live your lives whether you strive hard to get the things you wanted and to make your life change into better one or you just simply be contented  on the things you have and be happy to the way you live your life.

Reflection

        Our activity on Social Stratification was entitled the "Baby Egg", we were grouped into four, the lower class, the middle class, the upper class and the merchants. Our group belonged to the rich class and we have 300 pesos amount of money. We felt so excited, happy and proud because we could buy everything we want to provide the needs of our "Baby Egg" which represents our child. After which, we wrapped our baby with a lot of newspaper and other materials that we bought with our money to protect our child. As we dropped the egg, the rich egg was not broken. We realized that if a child is born provided with enough and sufficient  basic needs, then the child will be ale to survive and to live comfortably in this challenging society.

Social Movement in the Philippines

Concepts Observable in the Social Movement

The picture shows human action which falls under the collective action because it is a large number of people rallying with a certain purpose. It also falls on expressive movement because the laborers voice out their sentiments in a different ways who experienced deprivation of their rights and protection. At the same time, it is a reform movement because they want change to happen in their present system of government.

Reflection

Social movements are designed to meet change in the system of government that violates the rights of every Filipino in ensuring the good quality of living for its people that occurs in the real context of our society today. The nature of battles and rebellions in the Philippines ranged from personal, religious, economic, and civic to political motives. The major threat to democracy and economic development in our country continues to be the inability to bridge the gap between formal political rights and social equity. The political and socioeconomic costs of poverty and inequality are the main sarcastic elements to freedom and liberty in the country.

Struggle may be observed in any sphere of life and it's normal. That's why we as citizens of our country should not lean all our responsibilities to the government alone. We should find good ways on how to overcome poverty and be more industrious in order to provide the basic needs of each family. If all citizens have the same idea with this, I believe that we will all live harmoniously and with unity in which we have no time in forming for that social movement and rally across the streets just for us to be heard by our government. And if there are no corrupt officials in our government, we will not experience this kind of situation which deteriorates peace and act to protect what is right.

THE NATURE of MARRIAGE

EFFECTS TO THE SOCIETY

Marriage makes an essential contribution to the common good. Some specific benefits we observed are the following: Marriage and children; children raised by their own married mother and father are less likely to be poor or to experience persistent economic insecurity. Children are less vulnerable to serious emotional illness, depression and suicide. Another benefits of marriage is Marriage and Society; the institution of marriage creates the social and effective conditions for affecting parenting. Being married changes people's lifestyles and habits in ways that are personally and socially beneficial. It creates social bonds not only for the family but also for others as well, including the larger society.

REFLECTION

Perhaps the most important decision one ever makes is the decision to marry. Certainly, it greatly affects a person's personal happiness and future. But society at large also has an interest in the institution of marriage, therefore. Each state has enacted laws designed to ensure both legibility and stability of marriage union. To contribute a good and a stable family, married couples need to know their rights and obligations as husbands and wives. They must live together, observe mutual love, to be faithful  and to respect each other.
